Boycott Mt. Ashland
Declares Expansion Opposition
by Jason Houk
Citizen opposition to the proposed Mt. Ashland Ski-Area expansion have called for a community boycott of Mt. Ashland ski area this season.
As development prepares to go forward on the proposed expansion, community activists are turning up the heat. In September, the Regional Forest Service in Southern Oregon (with the support of the District office) gave the approval for Mount Ashland Association to go ahead with ski expansion plans on Mt. Ashland.
This summer, dozens of community organizers and concerned citizens have gone door to door in a grassroots information campaign. In September, hundreds took over the plaza in Ashland to show their solidarity and call on the community to boycott the Ashland Ski-Area until agreement can be reached with all involved.
Even as the city of Ashland and Mt. Ashland Association negotiate over ownership of the Ski Area permit, the challenges continue. The Rogue Valley Sierra Club is going to challenge the Forest Service decision. If the court in Medford decides to lift the injunction to allow for construction to move forward the Sierra Club does have plans to challenge this in the Federal 9th Circuit Court. Rogue Valley Sierra Club, Center for Biological Diversity and Oregon Wild also have plans to present a new lawsuit.
What can you do? You could talk to your neighbors and friends about what is happening. This is a highly controversial expansion that has the residents of Ashland split right down the middle. Contact Senator Wyden and Senator Merkley and request that they pressure the Forest Service to allow all legal Appeals to the Federal Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to be heard before any logging begins for the Mt. Ashland Ski Area expansion.
